A boat ride along the Bosphorus gave me a unique perspective of the city, showcasing its incredible skyline and iconic landmarks. And, of course, wandering through the Grand Bazaar was an adventure in itself, with its labyrinthine alleys and vibrant stalls.
How did you find the local cuisine?
The local cuisine was absolutely phenomenal! I indulged in a variety of traditional dishes like kebabs, mezes, and baklava. One of my favorite experiences was dining at a small, family-run restaurant where I had a delicious home-cooked meal and got to chat with the owners about their recipes and the history behind them. The street food was also outstanding – I couldn’t get enough of the simit (Turkish bagels) and fresh fish sandwiches from the stalls near the Galata Bridge.
What tips do you have for first-time travelers to Istanbul?
For first-time travelers, I’d recommend planning your itinerary to include a mix of well-known attractions and off-the-beaten-path experiences. Wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll likely do a lot of walking, especially in the old city. Learn a few basic Turkish phrases; the locals really appreciate it and it can go a long way in enhancing your interactions. Don’t forget to bargain at the bazaars – it’s part of the experience! Lastly, take your time to enjoy the city; there’s so much to see and do, and you’ll want to savor every moment.
